This is a 14km circuit walk jointly lead with Lynda Maddison and jointly run with Koonung Bushwalking Club.  We commence at the Blackwood Car Park at 8.45 am for a 9.00 start (on the Masons Falls Road, turn right immediately as you pass through the gates of the Masons Falls National Park).  The hike commences at this point (no toilets available) and follows a pretty path, Mt Sugarloaf Ridge Track, although the views of Mt Sugarloaf are not overwhelming, the track is pretty.  We then backtrack slightly to pickup Running Creek Track with a long downhill gradient (poles recommended particularly if wet), with morning tea on the descent.  We then follow Running Creek at the bottom through ferny nooks (look out for lyrebirds we saw 2 on the recce).  We then do the uphill track out of the valley (undulating and steep gradual ascent) to the Masons Falls Lookout. Lunch in the picnic area (with toilets) before a pretty walk back to the cars via Goodenia and Boundary Tracks.

Short Walk – Darebin Creek Track – Main Yarra Track-Fairfield Parklands – Kew Billabongs Mel Maps 31C10, 44H3 and 30K11

After leaving Alphington Station at 09.45 we walk 10 mins into Darebin Parkland (for a toilet Stop), then follow the path down to the Darebin creek and follow it to its junction with the Yarra.  On the way, (about 10.15) we will pass the house used as the residence in Dr Blake Mysteries.  A lot of the pathway is hard and used by bikes, until we reach the Main Yarra Trail.  Moring tea will be taken (10.35) near some logs just before reaching the Chandler Highway bridge.  At 10.50 we will continue to follow the Yarra on the path closest to the river to the Fairfield Pipe Bridge, the end of which we will reach by 11.55 (it is 5 minutes from there to the Fairfield boathouse.)

From the end of the bridge we will descend back to the river and walk downstream till we hit the bat colony.  From there we will walk back into Fairfield Parklands parallel to Yarra Bend Road and walk to Fairfield station for our train home.

The walk is 50% bushy, but still picturesque, and soft paths will be chosen where available, which means a few small ups and downs.

Grampians NP - Exploratory Recce Basecamp #1

Grampians NP Basecamp Exploratory Recce #1

This is the first of perhaps at least three trips to the Grampians over the next 12 months to explore different areas (north/central/south/outlying).

These exploratory trips will only include day walks, but some of the walks will be rated medium-hard, and will include visits to peaks such as Briggs Bluff. Expect conditions such as: steep hills; exposed rocky paths; light rock scrambling; cliffs; no shelter; poor visibility; sustained ascent; walking along steep exposed ridge. Please of course consider your ability before booking.

For this first trip I am thinking of perhaps including walks in the northern Grampians. This would include a selection from: Mt Zero; Mt Stapylton; Hollow Mountain; Briggs Bluff; Mount Arapiles (to the north outside park).

A second exploratory trip would include the central Grampians. This would perhaps include: Wonderland Loop; Mt Rosea Loop; Tower Hill; Victoria Ranges (to the west outside park).

A third exploratory trip would include the southern Grampians. This would perhaps include: Mt Sturgeon; Signal Peak; Mt Abrupt; The Chimney Pots.

More details to follow. Final choice of walks to be decided. No doubt easier walks will be mixed in.

The main Grampians Basecamp will be from Monday 10th - Sunday 16th November, 2025. Walking grades are expected to be more moderate.

For the first two exploratory basecamps, and the main basecamp, accommodation will be at Breeze Holiday Park, Halls Gap. There is cabin and site accommodation available, but due to the excellent location, it can get booked quickly. I have tried to avoid peak times and other clashes with the existing club programme. For the third exploratory basecamp, I am considering perhaps Dunkeld, due to the distance from Halls Gap. Please refer to the booking page for this trip for more info. For all trips, please arrange your own accommodation.
