SUMMARY:Altona and Truganina Park - Ian Gillies Walk
DESCRIPTION:This short walk (8km) commences at Altona Station\, continues d
 own Pier St to the beach and along the waterfront to Apex Park (toilets).

 
 Continue along the waterfront and up Laverton Creek (lots of bird life) 
 past a pre-war industrial explosives storage site (long closed) to a footb
 ridge across the creek into Truganina Park. From there we climb (18m) to t
 he 100 steps Centennial lookout (good view of the Bay\, city and more).
 
 We return by the same route with minor variations to Altona. Lunch is avai
 lable in restaurants there and there is a small park near the beach that w
 ould be suitable for those who want to bring their own.
 There is a bail-
 out option to Westona Station that would save about 1 km.
 The train depa
 rting Eltham 08:04 should get walkers to Altona at 09:26. Alternatively\, 
 there is reasonable carparking behind the shops.
 The late Ian Gillies re
 cced this walk earlier this year\, intending to lead it for the club. For 
 those who knew him\, this walk will be in his memory.
