Altona and Truganina Park - Ian Gillies Walk
This short walk (8km) commences at Altona Station, continues down Pier St to the beach and along the waterfront to Apex Park (toilets).
Continue along the waterfront and up Laverton Creek (lots of bird life) past a pre-war industrial explosives storage site (long closed) to a footbridge across the creek into Truganina Park. From there we climb (18m) to the 100 steps Centennial lookout (good view of the Bay, city and more).
We return by the same route with minor variations to Altona. Lunch is available in restaurants there and there is a small park near the beach that would be suitable for those who want to bring their own.
There is a bail-out option to Westona Station that would save about 1 km.
The train departing Eltham 08:04 should get walkers to Altona at 09:26. Alternatively, there is reasonable carparking behind the shops.
The late Ian Gillies recced this walk earlier this year, intending to lead it for the club. For those who knew him, this walk will be in his memory.
