This walk is in a delightful part of the Brisbane Ranges and some wildflowers might still be around. Length 12 km, grade M.

Leaving from the Anakie Gorge Picnic Ground, it starts with an easy 1 km stretch up the Stony Creek, then climbs sharply up to the gorge rim. Lookouts with views in various directions follow, then it descends into the Stony Creek Picnic Ground for lunch. After lunch, we take a side trip to see the Lower Stony Creek Reservoir, built in 1874. It is on the national engineering heritage list for significant innovations in dam building.

Returning to the lunch stop, the walk continues the last 3 km to the start.

There are some short steep sections going up and down and parts are rough and loose underfoot. Poles could be useful. Total climbing for the day about 300 m.

The drive from Eltham is approx. 115 km and 1h 35 m. Leader would appreciate a volunteer to organise carpooling if permitted under club rules on the day.

This walk is the same as the one postponed from  22 Sep 2021 due to Covid restrictions.   Do not forget Snacks, Morning Tea, Lunch, Sturdy shoes, hats, sunscreen.

Please add names of children accompanying you in the comments box when booking to aid prep of forms and nametags.

Park at (Mel 21 H10 Eltham Lower Park, near the new facilities block). The walk begins by following the Diamond Creek and then down the Yarra River via Lenister Farm. Then turns left and crosses the Yarra. After crossing the bridge into Candlebark Reserve and walk proceeds towards Petty’s Orchards.  Before reaching the orchard (at the end of the boardwalk) we veer to the right and walk up hill, bearing left onto a path that takes us down to an old dam. We walk along the edge of the dam and head west until we reach a mown track, onto which we turn right and head uphill next to the power lines.  Passing under the power lines we turn left onto a cleared access along a fence on its southern boundary and then take the path off to the right and walk for about 75 m and turn left onto a bike track.  We follow that bike path around a dam that eventually runs parallel (and behind) the houses on Fitsimmons Lane, following it back to the bridge over the Yarra.   Depending on demand we may turn left and do a short circuit into Westerfolds Park to use the toilets.  Then return to Eltham Lower Park for lunch.  Estimate 6 km.
