Activities Program

The main club activities are day walks and take place in a large number of different areas ranging from suburban parks to the nearby mountains. Historic walks around the suburbs of Melbourne are also on offer.
Basecamps, cycling and a range of social events are also offered. Trips within Australia, overseas and locally are also undertaken periodically.

Grading of Walks

It is most important that before you consider going on any walk, particularly those graded medium or more strenuous, you should consider whether you are sufficiently fit and experienced and have the necessary equipment.

Easy  Walking on gently undulating terrain, mostly on formed tracks. Suitable for most people. Walking time 4 to 5 hours, 6 to 12 km.

Easy/Medium  Gently undulating terrain, mostly on formed tracks with some short climbs. Walking time 4 to 5 hours, 10 to 15 km.

Medium   Some of the walk not necessarily on formed tracks, with some sustained climbs (1km or more). Walking time 5 to 6 hours, 10 to 20 km.

Medium/Hard   As for medium but includes rougher terrain, ie. heavy scrub, rock scrambling or longer climbs or descents. Walking time 5 to 6 hours, 10 to 20 km.

Hard   Consistent walking in difficult terrain, rock scrambling, thick scrub, steep ups and downs, creek crossings. Experienced and fit walkers only. Walking time 6 to 10 hours, 10 to 20 km

The walk will be along various tracks in the former gold mining area  behind Warrandyte. Although a short walk the surface is rough in parts, and there is a 210m climb overall, so poles are recommended.  We will finish for coffee, and maybe an early lunch, at the bakery.

The will begin by proceeding upstream along the Yarra bank for about 15 minutes.  It is a steady, but modest climb, and the drop to the river is steep. Poles are recommended. Then we will return to the junction with Mullum Mullum Creek (about 10 minutes), and back to Sweeney's Lane.

Then we will take the riverside track in Sweeney's Lane downstream to Griffith Park gate (about 25 minutes).  Then we return on the same path and break for morning tea about 1010.  About 5 minutes after the break we will take the left fork in the track and be back at the cars by 1045.

This is the fourth exploratory/reconnaissance trip to the Grampians NP.

Update 6/1/2026. Please refer to note below which was copied from the email I sent to all registered walkers as of 6/1/2026. In summary, we will be camping at Lakeside Tourist Park, Halls Gap, and driving to day walks. Because we are staying at Lakeside, you have the option of staying in a cabin, or indeed any other accommodation in the Halls Gap area.

** Please note: unsealed roads expected. We will be using Mt Zero Road a lot.

Because we are now staying in the one campsite for the basecamp (Lakeside), I have added a walk that we will probably do which is close-by. This walk is graded medium-hard/hard (see walk list below).

These exploratory trips will only include day walks, but some of the walks will be rated medium-hard. Expect conditions such as: steep hills; exposed rocky paths; light rock scrambling; cliffs; no shelter; poor visibility; sustained ascent; walking along steep exposed ridge. Please of course consider your ability before booking.

Walk before Winery Lunch

Meeting at the St Andrew's Pony Club in Clintons Road for a short walk along bush tracks and dirt roads before heading to the winery for lunch at 12 noon.  There are a few "undulating" hills but nothing too strenuous - just enough to increase your appetite for lunch.  No need for morning tea - bring poles if you use them as sometimes the gravel can be slipperary.

If you are coming to the lunch as well, please book the lunch activity - so I know who is doing what on the day.
