Basecamps, cycling and a range of social events are also offered. Trips within Australia, overseas and locally are also undertaken periodically.

Grading of Walks

It is most important that before you consider going on any walk, particularly those graded medium or more strenuous, you should consider whether you are sufficiently fit and experienced and have the necessary equipment.

Easy  Walking on gently undulating terrain, mostly on formed tracks. Suitable for most people. Walking time 4 to 5 hours, 6 to 12 km.

Easy/Medium  Gently undulating terrain, mostly on formed tracks with some short climbs. Walking time 4 to 5 hours, 10 to 15 km.

Medium   Some of the walk not necessarily on formed tracks, with some sustained climbs (1km or more). Walking time 5 to 6 hours, 10 to 20 km.

Medium/Hard   As for medium but includes rougher terrain, ie. heavy scrub, rock scrambling or longer climbs or descents. Walking time 5 to 6 hours, 10 to 20 km.

Hard   Consistent walking in difficult terrain, rock scrambling, thick scrub, steep ups and downs, creek crossings. Experienced and fit walkers only. Walking time 6 to 10 hours, 10 to 20 km

This 12km W shaped circuit walk has a bit of everything, making it a real adventure walk. Starting at Square Bottle Dam, we head down Razorback track, onto Razorback North which is a narrow single file track descending steeply for approx 3km and 620mtrs to the river. This track is mossy and can be slippery in wet conditions but its stunningly beautiful and well worth the effort. We cross the river here so will need to change into river/reef shoes/sandals, phones & electronics should be put in a zip lock or waterproof bag. After crossing the river there's a short rock climb (approx 20mtrs) to a single file track that we follow for approx 2km and our 2nd river crossing where the water level is usually higher/faster so make sure your pants can role high. Now we reach the 1st big ascent up Kenworthy track, its a very steep climb but you can stop and enjoy the views as needed. Now we follow Vodka track for 3km to descend approx 400mtrs to the dry Whiskey Creek, then its our final steep climb up to Square Bottle track. Now there’s just 5 significant undulations between us and the cars over approx 4km’s. Walking poles are highly recommended and river crossing shoes are a must. Bring plenty of high energy snacks, lunch and 1.5lts of water minimum plus electrolytes.

DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS: recommend taking the Western Freeway and exiting at Myrniong, turn right, cross the bridge and follow Old Western Hwy for 1.4km, turning right at Mount Blackwood Road which you follow for 10.4km until at a bend in the road, on the right hand side you see a small road side area for parking next to a dam and a Park access gate - hopefully I'm early enough to be standing there waving at you.

NOTE: Google has a habit of taking people from your side of town via back roads/dirt rds that might not be suitable so check the route on your computer before you go, if you decide don't want to follow my directions above.

CAR POOLING: Marg will organise this from the usual Greensborough location

Starting at the Blackwood Picnic Ground we will cross the bridge, head up the stairs, and follow the trail to Shaws Lake. Continuing on the wide fire trail roads through the pretty forest to Tunnel Point Track, we turn right, now it gets a bit rougher underfoot but still pretty good and wide for 5 km, then we start heading downhill to the river, here it's steep and narrow and in places rocky so poles are highly recommended. We will inspect and look around the beautiful scenery upon reaching the river. The tunnel was blasted through to redirect the river for gold mining in the good old days. There is a short rock scramble to climb down to a usually dry river bed. We cross to the other side, then it is uphill on the rocky and steep Gribble Track for about 200 metres.  We will lunch when reaching the junction of Byers Back Track. From there, we follow the Byers Back Track for approximately 9 km back to the cars. Byers Back Track is an old water race, so it is flat and follows the river in a winding faction This is a pretty bushland area with some great scenic views. The total distance is 16.6 km.

This is a combined walk with Koonung Bushwalking Club.

Meeting Time: 8.45 am for a 9.00 am start

Meeting Place: Blackwood Picnic Ground on Caravan Park Road. Drive past the caravan park & office to the car park, it costs $3 to park for the day, and put money in the red donation box when you drive past the office.

After leaving Alphington Station at 09.45 we walk 10 mins into Darebin Parkland (for a toilet Stop), then follow the path down to the Darebin creek and follow it to its junction with the Yarra.  On the way, (about 10.15) we will pass the house used as the residence in Dr Blake Mysteries.  A lot of the pathway is hard and used by bikes, until we reach the Main Yarra Trail.  Moring tea will be taken (10.35) near some logs just before reaching the Chandler Highway bridge.  At 10.50 we will continue to follow the Yarra on the path closest to the river to the Fairfield Pipe Bridge, the end of which we will reach by 11.55 (it is 5 minutes from there to the Fairfield boathouse.)

Scenic Rim is a strenuous 14km hard grade walk that takes you through some of the more remote areas of the Gorge.  We’ll be doing this walk as a car shuffle so it’s a little different and 2km shorter than the circuit walk that you can find on the internet. Our walk includes 1 river crossing at the Diversion Weir which could be a dry crossing or calf deep depending on rainfall so I recommend bringing river crossing shoes and walking poles will also be useful on various sections of this walk.  We’ll go in a clockwise direction so we can go down Long Point track, 2.4km, following the rocky ridge line to the river, some rock scrambling is required for the last 15 meters of the descend to the river. We cross the river now and head up the concrete fish ladder (easy) to the weir wall where metal stairs take us over the wall and we continue up the access road for the final section of the walk to find the cars at Hornell Lane and transfer back to the start and the remaining cars.

This is a great walk for experienced hikers that tests your bushwalking skills and endurance, walking in remote terrain with fantastic panoramic views of the Gorge.  As this is a car shuffle with limited parking, numbers will be limited to suit but on a positive note doing this as a car shuffle means we cut out the very eroded, steep descent down Link 1 and we miss the seriously steep and challenging climb up Spur Track.

This is a DUAL CLUB walk with Koonung.

Meeting Place: Public Toilets, Gisborne Road Darley, next to Federation Park -  KFC Greensborough to Federation Park Darley

Time: 8.30am to allow 30min for the carshuffle

BRING: poles, river shoes, 2lt water, lunch, lots of high energy snacks, layers for warmth, rain coat/wind proof layer, gloves, beany

CARPOOLING: Marg King will arrange from Greensborough as normal
