Razorback, Square Bottle circuit Lerderderg Gorge
This 12km W shaped circuit walk has a bit of everything, making it a real adventure walk. Starting at Square Bottle Dam, we head down Razorback track, onto Razorback North which is a narrow single file track descending steeply for approx 3km and 620mtrs to the river. This track is mossy and can be slippery in wet conditions but its stunningly beautiful and well worth the effort. We cross the river here so will need to change into river/reef shoes/sandals, phones & electronics should be put in a zip lock or waterproof bag. After crossing the river there's a short rock climb (approx 20mtrs) to a single file track that we follow for approx 2km and our 2nd river crossing where the water level is usually higher/faster so make sure your pants can role high. Now we reach the 1st big ascent up Kenworthy track, its a very steep climb but you can stop and enjoy the views as needed. Now we follow Vodka track for 3km to descend approx 400mtrs to the dry Whiskey Creek, then its our final steep climb up to Square Bottle track. Now there’s just 5 significant undulations between us and the cars over approx 4km’s. Walking poles are highly recommended and river crossing shoes are a must. Bring plenty of high energy snacks, lunch and 1.5lts of water minimum plus electrolytes.
DRIVING INSTRUCTIONS: recommend taking the Western Freeway and exiting at Myrniong, turn right, cross the bridge and follow Old Western Hwy for 1.4km, turning right at Mount Blackwood Road which you follow for 10.4km until at a bend in the road, on the right hand side you see a small road side area for parking next to a dam and a Park access gate - hopefully I'm early enough to be standing there waving at you.
NOTE: Google has a habit of taking people from your side of town via back roads/dirt rds that might not be suitable so check the route on your computer before you go, if you decide don't want to follow my directions above.
CAR POOLING: Marg will organise this from the usual Greensborough location
