Mt Sugarloaf/Antimony Mine, Pyrete Range Lerderderg State Park
Mt Sugarloaf/Antimony Mine, Pyrete Range Lerderderg State Park Distance: 14.5 km Grading: Medium
This is a joint walk with Koonung BWC.
The walk starts and finishes at the Pyrete Range entrance gate, Lerderderg State Park. The walk winds up the back of Mount Sugarloaf via a series of single file tracks, ascending approx. 300mtrs before walking down the other side on a wide gravelly track with some great views of Mount Blackwood/Lerderderg Gorge & Mount Bullengarook in the distance . We follow Antimony Mine Track for a scenic walk through lush bush with a variety of vegetation and wild flowers, out to the old mine site for lunch. We retrace our steps along Antimony Mine Track but turn right at the junction and continue on Antimony Mine Track for the 6.5 km journey back to the cars. There’s a short distance of off track on this walk and some tracks are rocky underfoot so poles are recommended. We also cross a dry creek by either climbing down into the creek bed or crossing over it via a wire mesh bridge, which ever works for you! There are also lots of mining artefacts to explore.
The presence of Cinnamon Fungus poses a serious threat to flora and fauna. Please clean your boots properly before and after the walk.
